Footballers cruise to victory over Fort William

SHETLAND cruised into the second round of the Highland League Challenge Cup with a 5-0 victory over Fort William at Claggan Park on Saturday afternoon.

A penalty from James Johnston after 10 minutes sent John Johnson’s men on their way and the lead was doubled before half time by Joe Leask.

In the second half, a double from returning midfielder Alan Duncan – both created by wing-back Leighton Flaws – further increased the blues’ advantage before Flaws himself completed the rout 20 minutes from time.

Among the stand-outs for Shetland in a composed team performance were the midfield trio of Johnston, Duncan and Karl Williamson, along with wing backs Flaws and Ross Moncrieff.

The comfortable victory, in the team’s first ever competitive match on the Scottish mainland, means they will face Cove Rangers – who won 3-2 at Nairn County on Saturday – in the next round on 23rd August.
