Tesco reveals extension plans

CUSTOMERS are to be able to examine Tesco’s extension plans with an exhibition on show at the store in Lerwick next week.

The company is hoping to significantly extend the South Road store and earlier this year submitted a planning application which would see the retail floorspace increase by more than 50 per cent, from its present 1,980m² to 3,176m².

It is not yet clear when the application will go before the SIC’s planning board but six objections from retail organisations and shops in the town have been received to date.

Tesco said this week that following discussions with the council’s planning department it has amended its plans to include measures to reduce energy consumption.

Corporate affairs manager Doug Wilson said: “We have been working with Shetland Islands Council to improve upon design and are pleased to incorporate a number of measures to improve the energy efficiency of the store.

“The enhancements that we are putting forward for our store in Lerwick will ensure that a greater food range can be stocked and that we can provide an enhanced offer for Lerwick and Shetland.”

The exhibition will take place next Wednesday and Thursday.
