Allotments group given start-up cash

The people behind a campaign to set up a series of allotments around the isles is to get a £500 grant towards its set-up costs from Lerwick Community Council.

An application from Shetland Allotments Gardens and Plots (SAGaP) was unanimously approved at a community council meeting in Lerwick Town Hall on Monday during which SIC councillor Jonathan Wills gave his strong backing for the project. “There’s a lot of interest from town people and the sooner we get it up and running the better,” he said.

A number of potential sites for allotments, including one at Seafield, are under consideration in the town.
