Search for fisherman called off

The search for a missing Norwegian fisherman who fell overboard was called off late on Friday.

Shetland Coastguard was alerted on Friday morning by the Maritime Rescue Centre in Stavanger, Norway, after they had received an alert from the vessel Arctic Swan that an 18-year-old man had fallen overboard.

A mayday relay was broadcast by the coastguard, which also sent out a helicopter from Sumburgh.

Fifteen vessels responded and a Norwegian coastguard helicopter was also sent out to scour the area, around 60 miles north east of Unst.

A helicopter winchman discovered a shoe, however nothing more was found.

The missing man was not wearing a lifejacket and the water temperature was just five degrees C.

The search was continued until Friday evening when it became clear there was little hope of finding the man alive.
