Man fined after being caught with knife

A Turkish man who rushed into the fast food outlet where he worked to grab a knife after becoming involved in a late night dispute was fined £100 at Lerwick Sheriff Court, despite not having any money to his name.

Oguz Altindal, 29, of Commercial Street, admitted having the knife in the town centre at 2am on Sunday morning.

The court heard on Monday that Altindal had been provided with food and accommodation by his employer but had not yet received any money for his services.

Fining him, honorary sheriff George Henderson gave Altindal one month to pay to allow him time to sort out some wages from his employer, who was away from Shetland at the time of his court appearance.
