Elma in guide

Tour guide and storyteller Elma Johnson has been listed by Cambridge Who’s Who, a US-based organisation which recognises executives, professionals and entrepreneurs throughout the world.

Mrs Johnson has spent the past 29 years introducing visitors to places of interest in Shetland, including landscapes and attractions such as restaurants and knitwear, jewellery and produce shops, through her Island Tours business.

She has also been a prolific storyteller, being self-taught on the isles’ history, and is now recognised as a leading authority on historic Shetland people and myths.

Her tours are best known for “In Aboot Da Night”, where she invites visitors to her Bigton home, overlooking St Ninian’s Isle, for a traditional Shetland meal.

Mrs Johnson said she saw herself as more than just a tour guide, rather a teacher sharing comprehensive knowledge of the history and folklore of her homeland.

A finalist for the Scottish Thistle Award, she attributes her success and longevity to her love for Shetland and her desire to make the place better known to others.
