Fish fiesta’s culinary experience will remain long in memories

The Fishermen’s Mission made £2,000 during its successful Fish Fiesta that took place earlier this month at the NAFC Marine Centre in Scalloway.

The event, which is designed both to raise money and demonstrate the great variety of seafood from around the islands, was the first attended by new mission superintendent Paul Govier, college director David Gray and Da Haaf restaurant manager Vicki Mordue, who was in charge of the catering.

Mr Govier said 82 of the 90 available tickets were sold and the guests were treated to a culinary experience that will remain in their memories for a long time to come.

He commended the staff at the restaurant who he said had really worked hard over the two days prior to the event and on the day. “A lot of people do not recognise the efforts that had gone in but the results spoke for themselves.”

After dessert and coffee the raffle took place, for which thanks were given to Dennis Coutts for the first prize of a free studio sitting and Lerwick Co-op for two bottles of wine. Once the meal was over and people managed to lift themselves from the chairs, Professor Gray gave an amusing and informative talk on his travels and experiences.

Mr Govier said the sum raised was only possible due to the generosity of the event sponsors: Shetland Fishermen’s Association, Seafood Shetland, Shetland Aquaculture and NAFC Marine Centre.

The feedback received from the event suggested it was one of the best ever. Supt Govier said: “As this was my first Fish Fiesta I will have to bow to the guests’ experience of previous events. It goes a long way to highlighting the culinary expertise of Vicki and her team and I would like to thank the NAFC for hosting the event.

“If word of mouth gets around after this year then you will need to get your tickets early as I feel we will sell out the 90 places that we are limited to next year.

“On behalf of the mission it only leaves me to say a most sincere thank you to everyone that has made this event possible and I look forward to next year’s Fish Fiesta.”
