Man airlifted to hospital in town

A severely injured fisherman, who crushed his hand in a winch, was airlifted to hospital last Thursday by the Shetland coastguard rescue helicopter.

The Fillipino crew member was working aboard the Peterhead boat Atlantic Challenge, 110 miles west of Shetland, when the accident happened.

The coastguard was contacted at 1.08pm by the skipper of the fishing vessel and due to the severe nature of the hand injury and potential for the casualty to lose fingers, the decision was taken to send the helicopter to the vessel. The fisherman was flown to Shetland and taken to the Gilbert Bain Hospital in Lerwick.

The fisherman was discharged from hospital earlier this week.
