Drewie’s tune comes out top

The results of the Shetland Accordion and Fiddle Club’s annual tune competitions were announced at a guest artiste club night in the Shetland Hotel last Thursday. Once more there was an excellent response from composers of all ages for the competition.

Ian Muir, leader of the London based Craigellachie Dance Band, judged the tunes and the band played the winning compositions on the night.

Placed first in the senior section (aged 16 and over) and winner of the Willie Hunter Memorial Trophy was Drewie Hawick from Lerwick with his composition Bob and Jennifer MacLaine’s two-step.

Second place went to a tune composed by Ivor Smith from Tingwall entitled Da Brunt Smuck. Lana Thomson from Burravoe was placed third for her entry Turning Point.

Junior section winner and recipient of the Allan Bruce Memorial Trophy was Callum Nicolson from Brindister for a waltz. Second place also went to Callum for a 6/8 march. Kirsten Napier from Cunningsburgh was third for her tune Uncle Sandy’s 60th.

Billy Hunter, home from Tunisia, presented the trophy in memory of his father to Drewie and Hazel Bruce presented the trophy, in memory of her father, to Callum Nicolson.
