Bressay Light secure indoor cricket title again

A rare defeat for Bressay Light in the weekend’s indoor cricket matches, going down to Southend, was not enough to stop the all-conquering side clinching another title. The action also saw two wins for Big Shots and a victory for Thunderbirds.

Bressay Light batted first and made a bad start with Stuart Fox being bowled by Darren Hitchin for just one run. The Southend bowlers were now on top and took two more quick wickets. Greg Burgess was the only batsman to trouble the attack, making a fine 34 until he was run out. Bressay Light scored 62 all out from nine overs.

Southend could see they had a chance for a rare victory but it was Bressay who made the better start by taking three early wickets. The pressure was on the last two Southend batsmen, Steve Lamb and Neil Maclean, who saw them through to the victory target of 63 for three off eight overs.

Lerwick A 63 for 4

Tbe Big Shots innings started well with both John Gray and David Nicol running well between the wickets, but Lerwick’s bowlers struggled with their line bowling a lot of wides.

With Gray and Nicol both retiring on 25, the remaining batsmen had to go for quick runs, causing Lerwick to take some cheap wickets. That brought the opening pair back to the crease and they continued with the heavy scoring, Gray finishing on 27 and Nicol on 38 not out. The Big Shots total was 138 for five from 11 overs.

Lerwick A were facing a daunting challenge and never really got going due to the accuracy of the Big Shots bowling. Only Ben Mullay reached double figures, Lerwick only managing 63 for four from 11 overs.

Emergency Services 89 for 5

Big Shots batted first and were taking the attack to the Services bowlers, both David Nicol and John Gray batting well until Gray was caught and bowled for 25 and Nicol was run out for 33.

Paul Nicol continued in the same vein, finishing on 30 not out and giving Big Shots an impressive total of 133 for four from 10 overs.

Emergency Services innings got off to a poor start with Peter Smith being caught and bowled for just six. The only batsmen to score any runs were Andrew Cooper who was out for 17 and Kevin Moar who made a fine 28. Emergency Services could only score 89 for five from 10 overs.

Thunderbirds 110 for 3

Thunderbirds made a decent start to their innings until Farhad Irvani was bowled by Peter Smith for 18. Craig Jenkins was in good form and finished on a fine 37 not out, while Paul Baxter also did well to finish on 28 not out. Thunderbirds reached a good total of 110 for three from 11 overs.

The Services innings started nicely with Andrew Cooper and Pete Smith running well between the wickets, finishing respectively on scores of 33 and 31 not out. After this Services were always behind the scoring rate, however, eventually ending on 89 for two from 11 overs.

The player of the week was David Nicol for his fine batting.
