Delting see off Spurs to set early pace

There were wins for Zetland and Delting in the latest round of matches in senior hockey’s Association Rosebowl competition.

Association Rosebowl

Scalloway 0, Zetland 2

After Scalloway’s defeat in their first game of the season against Delting, they were determined to put that behind them and started the first half strongly. They dominated much of the first half, putting lots of pressure on Zetland’s defence with some great passes into Zetland’s circle from Naomi Johnson and Kerri Redfern. However, Helen Robertson and keeper, Debi Kane worked well to keep Rowan Nicolson and Georgia Laurenson from scoring for Scalloway.

Zetland made some good play from their midfield through to their forwards, putting pressure on Scalloway’s defence of Nicola Smith, Anne-Marie Robinson, Cyndi Pottinger and Lauren Anderson who worked well to keep them out. Zetland then had a few penalty corners but keeper Christine Georgeson saved several attempts before Zetland opened the scoring with a goal from Shona Keith.

Scalloway were determined not to let this hinder them and with some great play from Kate Moncrieff and Mhairi Moncreiff in midfield were unlucky not to even the score. Zetland kept the pressure on Scalloway’s defence and scored their second goal from a penalty corner, making it 2-0 before half time.

Scalloway started the second half determined to even the scoring with great play from their midfield through to their forwards who were once again unlucky to score.

Zetland never gave up and their forwards of Stacy Gardener, Hannah, Aimee and Shona Keith kept the pressure on Scalloway’s defence who worked hard to keep them from scoring, with great play from Lauren Anderson and keeper Georgeson.

Players of the match were Shona Keith for Zetland and Christine Georgeson for Scalloway.

Spurs 0, Delting 2

Delting started in a very determined fashion with strong passing between Brenda Leask and Julie Kirkness. Spurs countered with a period of strong play with Gail McCulloch and Sarah Grogan linking well up front. They were denied goals by Karen Jarvie in goal for Delting.

Delting pounced on a loose ball out of defence and ran the length of the park before beating the Spurs defenders and winning a series of short corners which resulted in Michelle Stark scoring.

Spurs rallied at half time and managed to start the second half positively. Their passing was fluid as they moved the ball around, keen to level the score. Gayle Johnson and Irene Gray worked well on the right but a poor clearance at edge of circle was pounced on by Brenda Leask who found Julie Kirkness who made it 2-0 Delting.

Spurs continued to press undeterred by the second goal but once again Jarvie in Delting goal pulled off some outstanding saves.

Players of the match were Karen Jarvie for Delting and Gayle Johnson for Spurs.
