Delting edges passed Whalsay

The latest action in senior hockey’s Association Rosebowl competion saw Delting defeating Whalsay by a single goal and Scalloway and Juniors drawing their match. Unfortunately due to poor weather last Thursday’s games had to be postponed, and will be recheduled later.

Association Rosebowl

Delting 1, Whalsay 0

Both teams were eager to grab an early goal and Whalsay had the advantage of playing with the sun at their backs with Delting having to cope with the very bright conditions.

Fiona Dally, at sweeper for Whalsay, adopted her usual low stance to block the Delting attackers and cleared the ball out to Maree Simpson on the right and Maggie Kay Irvine in the centre. They built up play to Angelina Sandison who team up well with Eileen Sandison on the left wing to put Delting under pressure.

Michelle Stark and Kerry Burgess for Delting, ably backed up by Julie Crossan, combined to cross the ball into the circle and Julie Kirkness and Linda Gunn were unlucky on several occasions not to connect.

Kirkness left the field through injury in the latter part of the first half and despite several chances from both teams the score remained blank.

The second half resumed with Whalsay taking the passback. Delting quickly intercepted the ball and with some accurate one-two passing Michelle Stark and Linda Gunn worked the ball towards the circle where Michelle finished off with a close range push past Shona Moncrieff in the Whalsay goal.

The game settled into end-to-end battle butWhalsay put on the pressure in the final minutes and Delting goalkeeper Karen Jarvie showed great confidence, dominating her circle.

Delting held on to their lead to the end notching up their fourth victory of the season. Players of the match were Maree Simpson for Whalsay and Jill Hibbert for Delting.

Scalloway 1, Juniors 1

With Scalloway fielding only nine players Juniors were keen to take advantage, utilising the full width of the pitch in order to tire the depleted legs of Scalloway. Juniors made some good runs towards Scalloway’s danger area only to de denied access in the circle by Cyndi Pottinger and Kerri Redfern.

Most of the play was midfield with Scalloway getting a few chances through the dynamic sisters Nicola Smith and Naomi Johnson intercepting the ball and sending it to Melanie Inkster who unfortunately sent the ball wide. By the end of the first half it was hard to see were the holes in Scalloway’s defence were and the score remained at zero.

The second half started and the Juniors were determined to score and after only five minutes following a lovely pass to Margaret Johnson. She saw her opportunity, sailed in to Scalloway’s circle and scored.

Refusing to let their heads go down, Scalloway stepped up the pace resulting in three short corners in quick succession putting the pressure on Juniors goalie. The equaliser came through a fantastic pass from Kate Moncrieff to Melanie Inkster who this time found the target and fired the ball home.

Players of the match were Kerri Redfern for Scalloway and Rhiannon Inkster for Juniors.
