Shetland has enjoyed its sunniest June since records began, with more than 240 hours of sunshine. This tops the previous record of 236 hours set 50 years ago in 1959.

Shetland’s first gold of games as archer Billy Finnie sees off rivals

There was joy of the sweetest kind for archer Billy Finnie as he won gold in the single men’s compound event at the Island Games in Åland on Tuesday afternoon, while team mate Sara Leith picked up a bronze in the corresponding women’s event, helping to secure a team bronze medal as well to more than double Team Shetland’s medal tally to date.

Independent review of new school location expected to cost less than £100,000

Shetland Islands Council is optimistic it will conclude the urgent independent review of the proposed new Anderson High School on time and for less than £100,000. A public meeting is also to be held next month to hear more of the concerns voiced about the £49 million school.

Footballers finish bottom of their group after 3-1 defeat to Greenland

Shetland’s footballers went down to a humiliating 3-1 defeat against Greenland on Tuesday afternoon at the Island Games in Åland. Leighton Flaws scored the only goal for the isles side against a team that had until then been the whipping boys of Group A, shipping 10 goals in their first two matches.

Swimmer Strachan wins bronze in women’s 50m breaststroke

Shetland’s second bronze medal on Monday arrived thanks to swimmer Andrea Strachan, who finished third in the 50m breaststroke, adding to the medal won by the isles’ shooters in the team skeet event earlier in the day.
