Crew rescued as fishing vessel sinks

Shetland Coastguard was involved in the rescue of a fishing crew 100 miles off Shetland on Wednesday night.

The alarm was raised with the Coastguard by the Eider platform at 9.50pm, which reported the fishing vessel, the Banff registered Transcend was having difficulties and was taking water aboard.

Two more ships, the Ocean Ness and the Ocean Reaper were nearby to assist the vessel.

The SAR 102 helicopter was asked to take pumps to the Transcend but the crew was unable to cope with the amount of water coming on board and at 23.45pm all attempts to rescue the vessel were abandoned.

The five crewmen were taken by helicopter back to the Sumburgh base.
