Golfers see off showers in Shetland Transport open

Light showers and sunshine were the order of the day for the Shetland Transport open pairs women’s golf competition.

A good turnout of Dale members were augmented by some visitors from Whalsay and play started at midday with both first and 10th tees being used to speed up play.

The showers made for tricky conditions as waterproofs were on and off constantly throughout the day.

Winners of the handicap with an excellent net 64 were Valerie Morrison and Liz Simpson. Second were Iris Anderson and Linda Sandison with 68 and third were May Grant and Yvonne Smith with 69.

In the scratch competition Heather Hogg and Audrey Thompson and mother and daughter Mildred Blance and Morag Fox both finished on gross 84, which meant four players going back out for a play-off. The first, second and 18th were the designated holes and would be played until there was a winner.

The first and second holes were halved but on the 18th Audrey and Heather managed to par the hole to give them victory. Third were Angelina Jamieson and Louise Anderson with a gross 85.

Other winners were: Mandy Henderson for nearest the pin at the second hole; Janice Johnston and Christine Simpson won the mystery prize; Yvonne Smith and May Grant were nearest the 10th pin in two shots; best front nine June Wishart and Fiona Black; best back nine Ruby Smith with Morag Mouat Shetland Transport have sponsored the competition for a number of years and a spokeswoman said their support was much appreciated.
