Joy for Nesting rowers in first regatta

The first ever Nesting Rowing Regatta took place at the old air station at Catfirth on Saturday, with the weather providing ideal rowing conditions with a few showers and sunny intervals.

There were 11 clubs represented from Unst to Bigton. Unst had travelled down to take part in only one race – the under-21 women’s race and were able to secure third place.

Burra won top spot in the veteran men’s, veteran women’s and open men’s races.

Aith were first in the open women’s race, Lerwick were first in the under-21 women and under-16 boys’ races, Yell won the under-16 girls’ and Nesting won the under-21 men’s race with the fastest time of the day 5.34 minutes – they also received the biggest cheer of the day.

During the day spectators were kept well fed by the rowing club, Costa Coffee, the burger and ice cream van and refreshments were available in The Rowers Rest on the pier. An enjoyable afternoon of music was provided by Kollifirbolli and Brak da Bröd.

John Read of Robertson & Read, who kindly sponsored the regatta, presented the prizes to the winning teams, which was followed by a dance in the marquee with Country Rok, which rounded of the day perfectly.

A spokesman said Nesting Rowing Club would like to thank Robertson & Read, all the teams for competing, everyone who helped on the day and NorthLink Ferries for the star raffle prize.
