Golfers come from far and near for Whalsay doubles

The Golden Coach once again sponsored the Whalsay Ladies Doubles Open golf competition, held on Saturday in perfect conditions.

Fourteen pairs took part including visitors from Dale, Orkney, Aberdeen and Ireland.

The scratch winners of the Arthur and Sandison trophy were Loraine Anderson and Mildred Blance with a good 81. Second with 83 were Heather Hogg and Audrey Thompson and third with 93 Fiona Black and Eileen Spence.

Clear winners of the Arthur cup with a net 68 were Doreen Gray and Morag Mouat. Second were Liz Simpson and Valerie Morrison net 70, and third with a better back nine were Wilma Hutchison and Caroline Arthur net 71.

Longest drive in the silver division was won by Heather Hogg and in the bronze division by Morag Mouat. Nearest the pin on the 14th was won by Angela Irvine with eight foot one inch.

Nobody managed to stay on the second green for a nearest the pin so the prize went for the biggest difference between front and back nines to Sadie Napier and Helen Thompson.

A spokeswoman thanked all who contributed to the event, the players from Dale and further afield, Lynn for handing out the prizes and everybody who helped in the clubhouse.

The Decca Trophy was won by Linda Sandison and Evelyn Hutchison with a net 60. Some good scores were recorded on the day with Ruby Irvine’s net 68 reducing her handicap by one stroke, Angelina Jamieson and Evelyn Hutchison also both scoring net 69s. Twelve competitors took part and pairs of cards were drawn from a hat and the best combined net scores added together to decide the winners.

The June medals again saw some good scoring with Angelina Jamieson winning the silver and Caroline Arthur the bronze both net 69s. Margie Pearson won the midweek putting competition, also having the best net score on the day.

The Whalsay mixed open for the JL Irvine Memorial Trophies were played for recently with the same formidable pairings as last year retaining their titles.

Heather Hogg and Michael Boxwell’s gross 74 saw off Whalsay pairings Rosie and Graeme Sandison on 75 and Loraine and George Andrew Anderson on 76.

With a few net 63s in the clubhouse Valerie Morrison and John Philip Sandison looked clear winners after a net 61 until Evelyn Hutchison and Larry Williamson appeared with a net 59. After a countback Louise Anderson and Steven Anderson claimed third spot.

The spokeswoman thanked Martin Nicolson from R&M Nicolson for his continued sponsorship and all who helped at the clubhouse.

She said: “Special mention to the Tammy Norries who won top points and all who donated for Ingrid and David Anderson’s charity sports day fund-raiser for the lifeboat. Good luck with your Great North Run from all the golfers.”
