Big search in progress after distress call from boat

Shetland’s two lifeboats and Coastguard rescue helicopter are out searching off the West Side for a small boat after receiving a mayday call which cut off before a position could be given.

The search is believed to be for an unknown boat called the Still Waters II which was believed to be sinking. The Aith and Lerwick lifeboats launched shortly after noon but with no specific location to head for they have a vast area to search in deteriorating visibility.

The Scalloway harbour pilot launch Lyrie made an extensive search around Trondra, Burra and the isles and found nothing. Other boats are helping in the operation.

According to someone in Scalloway who heard the distress call, it sounded close by and was from a man with an English accent.

Shetland Coastguard is currently too busy to confirm details of the search.
