Athletes come home with medal haul

Saturday saw six of Shetland’s athletes competing in the first Highland, Island and Grampian Indoor Athletics Championship in the Aberdeen Sports Village, taking home three gold, three silver and two bronze medals in the process.

First to compete were the jumpers, with Alan Williamson taking gold in the senior men’s high jump event.

Meanwhile, the under-20 women’s long jump event saw Eilidh Peterson take silver and Allie Elphinstone take bronze. Competing alongside her teammates, Megan Smith took bronze in the under-17 women’s event.

The afternoon saw the Shetland athletes compete in the 60m sprint. After a tough round of heats, Lee Williamson took silver in the senior men’s final, with Haydn Thomason finishing just behind him to take the gold in the under-20 men’s event. After fighting their way into the final, Eilidh took the gold in the under-20 women’s event, with Allie close behind in silver position. A spokeswoman for the group extended their thanks to NorthLink Ferries for sponsorship.
