Great show by young swimmers

Shetland Swimming Association held its annual junior age group championships on Sunday, spon­sored by The A9 Partnership Ltd.

The championship involved children age 10 and under swim­ming 25m and 50m events.

In the eight and under age group Seumas Mackay (SM) dominated in the boys’ group by winning all four events in fine style and so taking the age group trophy. Dylan Black (SM) took the silvers in the backstroke and freestyle, Ian Poleson (WH) took the silver in the breaststroke and bronze in the freestyle, Stuart Bain (SH) won the bronze in the backstroke and Mark Hutcheon (SH) took the bronze in the breaststroke.

In the girls’ event Erraid Davies (SM), like her team mate Seumas, won all her events in tremendous style. The silvers were well shared out with Lianne Jamieson (WH) taking the freestyle, Jasmin Smith (SM) the breaststroke, Kayla Manson (LK) the backstroke and Kirsten Keay the butterfly. These girls also shared the bronze medals – Lianne backstroke, Jasmin butterfly, Kayla freestyle and Kirsten breaststroke.

Bowen Ratter (DD) took the nine years boys’ championship by winning the freestyle and butterfly, taking second place in the backstroke and coming third in the breaststroke. Reece Paul (LK) won the gold in the breaststroke and bronze in both the backstroke and freestyle.

The remaining gold went to Euan Polson (WH) in the back­stroke who also got silvers in the freestyle and butterfly. The final silver was won in the breaststroke by Bobby Laurenson (SM) who also won the bronze in the butterfly.

The girls’ nine years champion­ship was won by Ami Maddison (LK) who dominated the age group by winning all her events. Katie Bain (SH) won the silvers in breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle. The last silver was won by Sophie Black (SM) who also took bronzes in the backstroke and freestyle. The last bronze for breaststroke was won by Lois Ross (SH).

The 10-year-olds swam 50m of each stroke. Zevf Vessey (DD) swam brilliantly to win this age group, coming first in all his events. Morgan Morris (LK) won the silvers in the butterfly and freestyle while Johannes Kerr (SH) won the silver in the breaststroke and bronze in the backstroke.

Arthur Poleson (WH) won the last silver for the backstroke, Kieran Glaser (LK) managed to win the bronze for the breaststroke and Scott Robertson (DD) took the remaining bronzes for the butterfly and freestyle.

The Hutchison twins (LK) battled it out for the 10 years age group championship with Anne just beating Emmie to receive the trophy. Anne won the butterfly, breaststroke and freestyle and took a bronze for the backstroke while Emmie won the backstroke and took silver in the freestyle and breaststroke and bronze in the butterfly.

Sophie Morris (SM) swam well to take the remaining silver medals in the butterfly and backstroke and Shannon Davies (DD) won the last bronze in the breaststroke.
