Hockey team prepare for Scottish Cup debut

A Shetland women’s hockey team, sponsored by building firm DITT,  is due to head south this weekend to take part in the preliminary round of the Scottish Activity District Cup.

The players will take on Granite City Wanderers II at the Aberdeen Sports Village at 1.30pm on Sunday, with all supporters welcome.

A spokeswoman said it was an excellent new opportunity for the development of Shetland hockey with the squad being motivated to train hard for the chance to compete on the mainland. The team had an added incentive from sponsors DITT with extra sponsorship being awarded for each successful round of the cup.

A squad of 14 has been selected for the preliminary round from a pool of 24 players: Maggie Irvine (captain), Jillian Copland (vice-captain), Toni Sidgwick, Nicola Blance, Rona Simpson, Gayle Johnson, Sarah Grogan, Lynne Scollay, Josie Jamieson, Stacey Laurenson, Zoe Irvine, Victoria Duthie, Maree Simpson and Fiona Dally. The manager is Peter Sharp and umpire is Simon Skinner.
