Attempt to be made to re-introduce winter fuel payments

Half of councillors have signed a motion for this week’s Full Council meeting on Wednesday in favour of re-instating winter fuel payments to those over 65.

The payment – introduced when Shetland Charitable Trust’s annual Christmas payment to pensioners became means-tested – was halted in February when cuts were introduced to the budget for the current financial year.

Councillors behind the latest move include Cecil Smith, Jim Henry, Iris Hawkins, Allison Duncan, Florence Grains, Andrew Hughson, Robert Henderson, Addie Doull and Rick Nickerson.
