Council is nowhere (George Smith)

Look around local government across Scotland and you will see that many councils have in place robust plans with clearly-stated priorities and strategies to deal with the reduced resources available to deliver public services.

We hear a lot from Alastair Buchan about his “improvement plan” but the evidence to date, illustrated by the latest round of indecision and inconsistency regarding school closures, would suggest that Shetland Islands Council is nowhere near where it should be in having an administration of elected members and senior officials working together to a strategic plan aimed at protecting public services in Shetland to best meet the needs of the whole community.

It must be very difficult for anyone working in such an environment where there is little evidence of trust or collective responsibility. And in the meantime the Shetland community is left feeling confused and not listened to.

Alistair buchan could be god almighty himself and he still wouldn’t be able to control the clowns that most of us never voted for.
there will be no change at the hillhead until the Shetland public get rid of the like of clunness, miller, josie, etc.
That is where the problem lies and poor Alistair may as well beat his head against a brick wall.
