Drink driver caught almost four times over the limit is disqualified

Drink driving in Scalloway yesterday led to a man being disqualified from driving with immediate effect.

Appearing from custody at Lerwick Sheriff Court today, Brendon Smith, 34, of Glenview, Dunrossness, admitted driving with 137 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath on Main Street, Scalloway. The legal limit is 35.

Procurator fiscal Duncan MacKenzie said the fact that Smith was almost four times over the drink driving limit showed he had a “significant” alcohol problem. Mr MacKenzie said there was more to the case than met the eye, and Smith posed a “significant threat” to the public.

Honorary Sheriff Eric Peterson called for reports and disqualified Smith from driving meantime. The case was adjourned until 21st September and Smith was released on bail.
