Crystal ball gazing (George Smith)

We hear that Shetland Islands Council intends reducing its spending by £26 million over the next two years and is to ask the public where the cuts should fall.

Yet this council has just spent £36,000 on a crystal ball gazing exercise creating different scenarios for the future!

Surely a more appropriate use of that consultancy money would have been to carry out a comprehensive impact assessment of the effects of reducing council expenditure by so much so quickly and to have that available at the public meetings to discuss the cuts.

It is not just the unions that should be concerned about how this council is going about its business.

Lets not forget that our council has already paid off a number of under 55 senior officers before April. That will probably cost the local taxpayer over £500,000 a time. Some in our economy will be happy.
