The by-election to replace Iris Hawkins as councillor for the central ward is to take place on Thursday 15th December, it was announced this week.

SIC returning officer Jan Riise said nomination forms would be available from the council’s legal and administration offices at 4 Market Street, Lerwick, from Friday 4th November.

The winner of the by-election will have to stand for the council again next year at the Shetland-wide election in May.

Mrs Hawkins, who had been on the council for 17 years, stood down on 30th September to spend time with her husband-to-be Magnus Hughson.

Mr Riise said he wished to remind residents of the ward to ensure they are on the electoral register. If a person’s name does not appear on the Register of Electors, they are not eligible to vote.
