Woman caught at more than twice drink driving limit

A woman was caught behind the wheel at more than twice the legal drink driving limit.

Barbara Jacobs, 59, of Assater, Hillswick, was seen veering about in her car at 11mph on the A970 near her home at around 2pm on Wednesday afternoon.

She had been travelling from her house to a local shop to buy alcohol, among other things.

She was so shocked to see police turn up at her door she dropped a bottle of wine she was carrying.

At Lerwick Sheriff Court today she admitted driving with 82 microgrammes of alcohol in her breath – the legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

She also pleaded guilty to a second charge of failing to identify herself as the driver.

Sheriff Philip Mann deferred sentence on Jacobs for background reports after hearing she had previous convictions, and disqualified her from driving in the meantime.

“It’s clear there is something going on in the background that we need to get to the bottom of.”

She was released on bail until 16th November.
