Teenage driver banned for a year and fined £500

A teenage driver caught over the limit was fined £500 and banned for a year when she appeared at Lerwick Sheriff Court today.

Jodie Leask, 19, of Toabsgeo, Virkie, was stopped by police at 2.50am on 2nd February due to the manner of her driving. She failed a roadside test, was arrested and taken to the police station.

The court heard Leask had been driving her mother’s car, only having passed her test weeks earlier. She was found to have 59 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – the legal limit is 35.

Sheriff Philip Mann banned her from driving for 12 months, to be reduced to nine months if she undertakes the drink drivers rehabilitation course. He also said her fine was payable at £10 per fortnight.
