Cost of everything and value of nothing (George Smith)

The recent revelations about the proposals to investigate the introduction of frozen meals for those receiving meals on wheels and to close the Freefield Centre are just two examples of the old council knowing the cost of everything but the value of nothing.

Thankfully, the new council will make the final decisions on these and a number of other proposed cuts to services, some of which would affect the more vulnerable people in our community.

If I am successful in being elected to the council, I shall be insisting that proper research and analysis of the likely economic and social effects of any proposed cut to frontline services be carried out before any decision to implement the cut is considered.

For the record I shall not be supporting the introduction of frozen meals.

George Smith

Prospective councillor,

Shetland South.

I agree entirely with George. I hope that if you are elected, you and your fellow Councillors will look at the social and economic impacts of any cuts to the islands. This current Council have made rash decisions based on a ‘quick fix’ attitude to cost cutting without taking into consideration the devastating effects on our communities. They have also taken the easy route of making the most severe cuts in areas where they never set foot, with lower population to make a fuss.
