Three-mile long oil slick spotted to east of Shetland

An oil slick measuring three miles long and 500 metres wide has been spotted over 60 miles east of Shetland.

The Maritime Coastguard Agency was informed after the crew of an offshore helicopter spotted the slick shortly after 10am this morning.

A fisheries protection aircraft which was near the area at the time was diverted to investigate the scene.

Photographs taken of the slick are due to be examined by the MCA’s counter pollution salvage officer.
