Questions raised about cost of work on Sullom Voe tugs
Questions about the cost of work on the troubled new Sullom Voe tugs Solan and Bonxie were raised today.
The two vessels have been out of service since the Solan lost power and was struck by the shuttle tanker Loch Rannoch before Christmas. An inquiry has been carried out into the incident but its findings have not as yet emerged into the public domain.
Councillor Jonathan Wills told the environment and transport committee he had heard that the tugs, which together cost £14 million, were having to be partly rebuilt to alter their underwater profile. He said there were two things he wanted to know: what the inquiry said and, if a partial rebuild was necessary, who would be paying for it.
He demanded to know “this week please, in confidence if necessary”, and added that he intended to find out. He said: “Why we haven’t been told is a mystery to me.”
Chairman of the meeting Allan Wishart said there had been an “information vacuum” about the subject and executive manager Phil Crossland told Dr Wills he was happy to provide an update. A report will be given to the harbour board later this month, Mr Crossland said.

Well done Jonathan, about time someone started asking questions.

Having just been up to Sellaness the other day why are the two new tugs sitting there with engines or generators running and with crews onboard when they have been taking out of service, thus wasting fuel which is not exactly cheap. Council savings, take a run up to sellaness and see for yourselves.
