Sexual abuse earns restaurant worker place on sex register

A Chinese man has been placed on the sex offenders’ register after he sexually abused a 15-year-old girl.

At Lerwick Sheriff Court today, Ching Shiong Heng, 30, of St Magnus Street, admitted causing the girl to participate in a sex act at his address on 5th November last year.

Procurator fiscal Duncan MacKenzie said Heng had instructed the girl not to tell anyone after he had committed the offence.

However she later told one of her teachers about what had taken place. She had initially purported to be seeking advice about a friend, however the teacher suspected the friend was the girl herself and, slowly, the story emerged.

Defence agent John Slavin said Heng, who works at a Chinese restaurant in Lerwick, had not tried to minimise what he had done.

He said Heng’s employers had been made aware of the situation, adding that Heng was likely to be deported as his visa was due to expire.

Calling for background reports, Sheriff Philip Mann deferred sentence until 5th September and released Heng on bail.

He told him: “I’m obliged to get reports from the social work department before I decide what to do with you.”
