Serco could cut up to 36 jobs on north boats

The company which this year took over the running of the ferry service between Lerwick and Aberdeen has announced plans to shed up to 36 jobs from its Northern Isles service.

Serco NorthLink says management talks with workers and unions have already begun. The company says its aim is to adopt a flexible approach to crewing its vessels, and insists safety will not be compromised. It is hoped the cuts can be achieved without the need to call for compulsory redundancies.

This week Serco NorthLink opened bookings for next year, which will see freight and passenger fares rise by 2.8 per cent, as agreed with the Scottish government.

I’m sure i have mentioned before – there are effectively only two ways reduce costs to “undercut” a rival bidder, cut services or cut jobs – I guess we now know at least one of the routes Serco are taking – and what about all the promises that things would stay the same? Mean little once the contract is signed!
