Global audience for Up-Helly-A’

A global audience will be able to view the Up-Helly-A’ festivities as the proceedings as streamed over the internet.

Promote Shetland is preparing for the webcast and four cameras will capture the procession and burning – one in the old library, one at the Lower Hillhead, one on King Harald Street and one overlooking the George V playing fields.

The webcast has grown in popularity since it was first attempted in 2010 and was watched by several hundred viewers. Last year that numbered 8,666.

Andy Steven of Promote Shetland the footage would be relayed from the 60 North TV broadcast suite at Mareel for the first time. The bandwith would be doubled in anticipation of an even bigger audience.

He said: “Up-Helly-A’ is a real community event and we enjoy being able to broadcast it via the internet to those unable to get out to see it and to the Shetland diaspora.

“This year the website has a new look, with an embedded Twitter feed so you can see what other people are saying about the festival, and it will work just as well on an iPad.”

Brilliant !!! We lived in Shetland 1992-98 and attended every one. We so enjoyed the broadcast last year as it reminded us of out time there. Will you be broadcasting again this year ? … We would like to invite friends around to watch with us !
