Visiting couple ‘got drunk and fought’

A short trip to the isles turned sour for an Aberdeen couple at the weekend when they started fighting each other in a popular Lerwick night-spot.

Richard Smith, 32, and 29-year-old Cheryl Irvine drew the attention of door-staff at Posers in the early hours of Sunday by having the scrap.

As a result of their antics the couple saw the inside of a police cell for much of their visit here.

The pair were fined £200 each when they appeared from custody at Lerwick Sheriff Court today.

Procurator fiscal Duncan MacKenzie said the couple had gone out and got drunk.

He added there was an argument which developed into “further disagreement”.

That attracted the attention of door-staff, and the police were called.

Defence agent Tommy Allan said the couple, who have been together for nine years, had been drinking too much. He said their behaviour was not “an edifying spectacle”.

However he stressed they had spent over 24 hours in custody since the offence.

Sheriff Philip Mann told the couple: “It’s not acceptable that you came to Shetland and caused a disturbance in this manner. You no doubt caused alarm to people around you.”
