Go-ahead for waterside cafe at Lerwick’s Sea Road

Work on the new cafe-bar Fjara at a picturesque waterside location near Tesco can now go ahead after councillors approved the plans this morning.

Local businessman Dennis Leask announced proposals in May to build the new eatery, which will feature seating for up to 40 customers.

Members of the SIC’s planning committee gave the proposals their backing when they met at the town hall this morning.

Mr Leask wants light dining, snacks and a “civilised” drinking atmosphere to be the main features when the single-storey, timber-clad construction is opened for business in Sea Road.

A planned 30-week building programme could see the cafe-bar’s doors opened to customers next spring.

The plan is to avoid catering for the “pub-crawl” market, and promises to offer views for seal-watchers to enjoy.

The cafe is expected to attract customers from Nederdale and Westerloch areas who lack similar services.

You are not obliged to enter the building Mr Barlow. The shore is free for anyone to stroll along.

I think it is a good site for a cafe and I am surprised Tesco never thought of it before. I just hope the building works and people visiting the cafe does not put off the seals which bask on the rocks. The view itself is quite nice. I also hope the building can stand up to the southerly gales lol

I think it is something which is needed since the demise of the cafe in Safeways.

But I do wonder about town planning. If everything is moving oot the Sooth Road, what future is there really for the street with it being more and more difficult to park there and more and more is out of town, including work places? It is the same all over, all the business and retail parks must have an effect on the town centres. We cant sustain it all.

Very nice location and will attract a lot of customers I feel. I know its still very early on in the building process but I was wondering how many jobs would this café/bar support?
