Jim Mainland to launch new collection

Shetland’ s Wordplay Festival this September will see the first reading and launch of League of Notions, a pamphlet of new poems by Nibon’s Jim Mainland.

Mr Mainland, a committed poet who writes every day, has only recently retired as principal teacher of English at Brae High School, where he helped and encouraged many younger writers.

The pamphlet will be published by Hansel Cooperative, who have previously produced similar works by Stella Sutherland , Laureen Johnston and Christie Williamson. The graphic design and illustrations are by Orkney sculptor Frances Pelly.

In his foreword to the pamphlet, Donald Anderson says “His poetry is like him. He once told me that he wrote because he couldn’t sing. His poetry can sing.”
