Missing pensioner search – body found

Police searching for a missing pensioner in Lerwick have confirmed that a body has been found.

A widespread search involving the police, coastguard and Dogs Against Drugs officers was launched on Sunday after Alistair Wishart, 74, was reported missing.

He had last been seen in the John Jamieson Close area of Lerwick. In a statement released this afternoon the police said: “The family of the missing man have been informed but formal identification is still to take place.”

UPDATE: At about 5.15pm police confirmed Mr Wishart had been identified.

A police spokesman said: “Extensive searches were carried out for Mr Wishart, of John Jamieson Close, Lerwick, Shetland, who had not been seen since Saturday evening.

“Sadly his body was discovered on the shoreline below Breiwick Road in Lerwick earlier today. Enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
