Security scare at Sumburgh Airport

A security scare closed Sumburgh Airport for around an hour this morning after an unattended bag was found in the terminal around 11.25am.

The bag was x-rayed but airport staff could not identify the contents, and a tannoy announcement failed to reveal the passenger.

The airport was then evacuated, in line with standard procedure, and Police Scotland were informed. The terminal was closed for around an hour, during which time the passenger came forward and explained that the bag contained offshore testing equipment.

An incoming flight was allowed to land while the airport was closed, but passengers had to stay on board until the all-clear was declared. Two departing flights were delayed: the 11.20am to Glasgow was  delayed to 12.53pm and the 11.25 to Aberdeen did not fly until 1pm.

john tulloch grow up! do you think 9/11 and Lockerbie was a joke?! Thousands of people died in these attacks so obviously at airports these security measures have to be taken.

    Joe Johnson,

Red-puffed-cheeked and bustling furiously in his corsets perfectly exhibits the mindset of po-faced security types – no sense of humour.

Of course, I was joking, although, with hindsight, I should have recognised the danger of a plane being hi-jacked by enraged Skerries parents and flown into the Toon Haall.

Mind you, airport security in general is becoming very strict, indeed. I hear Santa was held up for two hours at Rovaniemi because there were a number of suspicious packages in his sack and he and Mrs Claus were most perturbed by having their body images displayed on body scanner screens!

Meanwhile, in Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad), 34 people have been killed in the last 24 hours in two suicide bombings, one at a railway station and another on a bus. Maybe we should have to apply for permission to leave our houses with a scanner posted in every street to cope with the demand?
