Man admits sexually assaulting sleeping woman

A man has been placed on the sex offender’s register after sexually assaulting a woman as she slept off a night out.

Christopher Weldon, 39, of Lower Cwmtwrch in Swansea, admitted touching his victim at an address in Leaside last year.

Lerwick Sheriff Court today heard Weldon had been “hammered” after returning to the house following a night out on 2nd November.

Procurator fiscal Duncan MacKenzie said the woman had been sleeping on a couch when Weldon committed the offence.

She slowly came to in a confused state, and took time to realise what had happened to her.

When she awoke Weldon walked away and she saw him leaving the room.

The court heard Weldon had been “very drunk” at the time. Mr MacKenzie said the issue may have been more to do with alcohol than any form of sexual deviance.

Sheriff Philip Mann deferred sentence for background reports to be compiled.

Placing Weldon on the register, he said: “I realise this may cause you a considerable degree of inconvenience for some considerable time, but that’s something I’ll have to look at at the time of sentencing.”

Weldon will appear in court again on 20th March.
