Driver caught doing 120mph

A driver who reached speeds of 120mph has been banned from the road for a year and fined £500.

Brydone Williamson, 19, of Voe was nabbed driving at the three figure speed on 21st November.

He admitted driving dangerously and at grossly excessive speed when he appeared before sheriff Philip Mann.

The court heard Williamson had been driving home from Scalloway on the main A-route to Voe. He slowed down after seeing the police and was “shocked” and “very concerned” to learn the speed he had been caught at.

Defence agent Kathryn Gordon said the road had been clear, there were no junctions and he was the sole occupant of a well-maintained car.

She said the apprentice marine engineer had admitted he deserved to lose his licence. But she added he hoped to keep the period of disqualification as low as possible.

Banning him sheriff Mann told Williamson: “I don’t have to tell you how dangerous it is to drive at these sorts of speeds.”
