Man charged with causing death by dangerous driving

A man has appeared in private at Lerwick Sheriff Court charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

West Side man John James Daniel Pottinger, 20, known locally as Jamie, is also accused of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

He made no plea or declaration, was committed for further examination and released on bail after appearing in the dock on petition.

Meanwhile, tributes have been paid to a 38-year-old man who died after being struck by a car in Burra at the weekend.

George Armour, who was from Brae, was killed after the collision shortly before 2am on Sunday morning.

The incident happened on the B9074 at Hamnavoe following a dance in the local public hall to mark Burra’s annual rowing regatta.

Traffic restrictions were put in place in Hamnavoe and in the Tingwall Valley yesterday as police carried out their investigations.

Mr Armour, a husbandryman for Scottish Seafarms, was a father of three.

He was originally from from the isles but moved south during his childhood. He attended Deans High School in Livingston and studied at the Auchincruive West of Scotland Agricultural College.

Having returned to the isles he lived initially in Brae and later in Clousta in the West Side.

His 17-year-old step daughter, Lois Laidlaw, said he was a very loving man to her and her brother Dylan.

“He was a hard-working family man. He was there for us all and everyone loved him.

“He was liked and there was nobody who didn’t like him.”

Various tributes and messages of support were also paid to the father of three on Facebook.

“Such sad news,” said Carolyn Duffy, “I mind him when he was just a little boy. God bless.”

Ruthie Thomason said: “I know he will be sadly missed by all.”

My cousin George will be very sadly missed. It is very hard to believe how he has been taken from us in such a cruel and unnecessary manner.

So very sad, two families distraught, one life lost, one ruined. There but for the grace of God it could be any of us. Just a thought, after the provisional license, how about a four year spell as a probationer driver. P plates, no high performance car (under 1 litre), just a chance to gain experience. After 60 years, a S plate. just to let the world know your reflexes are not too good. S senior or senile, who cares. My thoughts and love to both families.
