Young swimmer Erraid Davies will compete in the final of the 100m breaststroke in her class at the Commonwealth Games.

Davies, the youngest Scottish team member ever, is competing in the Women’s Para-Sport category SB9.

In a superb swim this morning she secured a final slot in 1 min 22.08 secs – some four seconds quicker than her qualifying swim. The personal best time saw Davies finish second in the heat and if she repeats that performance in tonight’s final, she has a realistic chance of winning a medal in the Tollcross pool.

Meanwhile Lynda Flaws was part of the Scottish ladies table-tennis team which made history by becoming the first to win a match at the Commonwealth Games. Flaws’ team mate Gillian Edwards referred to the historic win on Facebook, adding,  “and we did it twice!”.

Scotland beat Jamaica 3-0 and faced Northern Ireland this morning in the Women’s Team Classifications Final. Flaws enjoyed some success against Northern Ireland winning a doubles match 3-0, however she was defeated by the same score in the singles element of the contest.

Flaws has been enjoying the experience and has spoken of the “amazing” atmosphere playing in front of a home crowd, on Twitter.

She added she was “delighted to see people enjoying watching table tennis for the first time too.”

I think all three lasses involved have done themselves and all of Shetland proud. Well done, it gives us ex-pats something more to cheer about.

As someone coming to live and work in Shetland, it has been amazing to see such a strong sporting culture. Andrea, Erraid , and Lynda are not only outstanding sportspersons but are also outstanding Shetlanders at the heart of an amazing community of people. I am very much looking forward to becoming part of the Shetland community. What great stories you have to tell. Congratulations to the three of you.
