Power cut affects 1,200 properties

Almost 1,200 properties in the South Mainland were left without power after lightning strikes this morning.

The Sandwick school was among those without electricity, although the power was back on within two hours and the school remained open.

Also affected was the Overtonlea Care Centre in Levenwick, but generators there were used to keep the lights and heating on.

SSE said the power-cut impacted on 1,199 properties from around 10.20am.

However work was quickly carried out to restore the lost power. By noon only 50 homes or businesses remained off, and SSE hoped to have everyone affected back on stream by 12.30.
