Happy Norwegian Day!

This group of visitors arrived in Lerwick Harbour this morning in celebratory mood looking to make the most of their national day with a visit to the isles.

With flags flying and drums beating there was no doubting the Norwegian visitors, who sailed into Lerwick, were here to have a good time on what is an official national holiday in their homeland. Their number was further bolstered with hundreds more arriving on board the cruise ship Ocean Endeavour to mark the day in the isles.

However, there will be a more sombre element to the day’s events with a ceremony and wreath-laying at the Shetland Bus Memorial in Scalloway.

It is anticipated that about 300 Norwegians are expected in Scalloway for the memorial this afternoon, after which teas and homebakes will be served in the Scalloway Hall, with a performance of Norwegian songs.

If only the Shetland Islands was part of Norway…………………may be one day……when the oil and gas runs out and Scotland/UK has no further use for the islands, eh?

        lol yes, Gordon.

Once we are free from the shackles of the EU, as some people may see it, we will be better off on our own…………………..or will we?

I suspect, for the average British citizen, life, free of the EU, will become much harder and most certainly more expensive.

Britain being free of Europe, being free of the European Human Rights Act, being free of more bureaucracy etc etc. Nothing would better than for those in power within the UK, to do as they please, when they please and how they please without the burden of acknowledging people indeed also have rights.

The UK, can trade with who it wants with, whether it is part of the EU or not. It has not stopped Britain trading with any Tom, Dick or Harry when it comes to the arms industry, aided and abetted by our (so-called) ally across the loch. (war, conflict and the destruction it causes is big business – especially for the Banks).

Will we be better off out of the EU??? Based on what I have heard so far, NO!!!!!!!

lol Gordon, I think many Shetlander’s would prefer to be under the rule of Norway, regardless of the EU.

Just because you wish to be part of Norway, has nothing to do with you supporting to be outwith the EU.

It is the equivalent of saying Shetlander’s approve of whale hunting because Norway has started hunting them again…………..I am pretty sure most Shetlander’s would oppose such hunting…….regardless of nationality.

Any idea that Norway has lost interest in Shetland is clearly fanciful.
