Fishermen’s association invites new minister to the isles

Shetland Fishermen’s Association has welcomed the appointment of Fergus Ewing as the new Scottish fisheries minister.

Mr Ewing has been handed the role in the new Scottish government. His official title is Rural Economy and Connectivity Secretary, replacing Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead who announced he was resigning from the cabinet ahead of the reshuffle.

SFA executive officer Simon Collins said he looked forward to working with Mr Ewing, particularly on making the discard ban regulations operable in practice and obtaining a fairer deal on mackerel.

“We believe he is someone we can do business with and will be inviting him to Shetland as soon as his diary allows so that we can share some of the progress that we have made and also highlight our concerns for the future.

“Fishing is a critical element of our economy and society here in Shetland, and it’s hugely important that we don’t harm its prospects when it is growing again after many difficult years.”

Mr Lochhead faced fierce criticism over the way CAP payments to crofters were handled during the latter stages of the last government’s term in office.

Perhaps, Messrs Collins and Ewing will be able to explain to us how and why Shetland being in the EU benefits our fishing industry?

Indeed, Brian. And Ms Barton and Messrs Smith and Skene, too!

The problem is all these politicians are tied to their national parties which all support UK membership of the EU.

The problem is that Shetland has huge dependence on the fishing industry and would be better off outside the EU, like Faroe. This is one powerful reason why Shetland needs to become autonomous with the power to leave the EU.

So I cordially invite any and all of those mentioned to answer my question which I have asked many times on here and have yet to receive an answer. Perhaps, you will answer it, Brian?

“Why is it beneficial for Shetland to remain in the EU while our fishing-dependent neighbours Faroe and Iceland choose not to join?
