READER POLL: The vote is now open for the 2017 Shetland Times calendar competition

Over 100 photographs were put forward to feature on next year’s Shetland Times calendar.

After much deliberation staff at The Shetland Times have whittled those entries down to just 12.

In the interest of fairness we have decided to include only one photograph from entrants who submitted multiple pictures.

And now it is over to the readers to have their say. Pick your favourite from the gallery above to make sure that your favoured shot is in with a chance. The poll will remain open until Tuesday at 5pm.

It captures many essences of Shetland. Wool, colour, wonderful childhood friendship, warmth. It’s just so lovely.

The sunset in Lerwick one looks very photoshopped. The rest look real. Brilliant photo off the queens beach.

What, in essence, is the difference between a “Photoshopped” image and one which has been produced with long lenses, fancy filters, or the 101 clever tricks embedded in modern digital cameras and phones? In times past many a black and white photo was “enhanced” by manipulations in the darkroom. What was asked for was an “image” for our calendar. Lots of folk reckoned last year’s photo would have been improved if the hydro poles had been Photoshopped out of existence. Should they have been? Would it then have ceased to be a suitable calendar image? Or should we only be using “genuine” images produced on a box-Brownie? Anyway, it’s your choice.

I take what Robert has said in regards to altering or amending a photograph to enhance the effect or to bring to the fore elements of the picture. However though, I guess it should also be recognised that what the camera (your eye) see’s and what changes digital technology can do to the original should also be taken into account when looking at a picture.

We all know that models are photoshopped to a level where they look almost perfect in terms of complexion, shape and tone. This also brings to the fore what is digitally changed so much to the original it has no resemblance to the original and what is a true representation of what the camera originally see’s.

I use digital technology quite extensively in terms of photography but also in editing and using graphic software to enhence, change or use in an artistic manner to bring features out or give a radical change to the image because the technology allows you the ability to do so.

Overall, I do not see any harm in using graphic software to give subtle change to a picture which gives it a greater impact visually.

I really would love to buy this calendar as soon as it will be printed – will it be possible to order it from Germany?

    Thank you very much!

Hi Babette, I am sure there would be no problem ordering a Calendar from the Shetland Times. I presume the Shetland Times would take phone orders? I suspect there would also be an additional cost in posting due to your distance? Other than this, I cannot see any ptoblems.

Here is the Shetland Times phone number : 044 (0)1595 742000

      I hope this helps ?
