A LIVE scorpion measuring approximately 3cms long was discovered aboard the NorthLink ferry Hjaltland last Tuesday. The ferry was berthed in Aberdeen when a stewardess cleaning one of the cabins found the scorpion in bedlinen at around 8.30am.

The cabin where the scorpion was found was sealed off while pest control officers were called to the scene. The scorpion was recovered still alive and taken away to Aberdeen University for further examination where it was identified as a European scorpion. According to experts at the university it could have imparted a sting not unlike that of a wasp, and the most likely theory is that arrived on board the ferry in the baggage of an unsuspecting passenger.

Environmental health inspectors were also informed and the cabin and adjoining cabins were also inspected further, deep cleaned and given the all clear.

The last occupant of the cabin was also informed. The ferry sailed later that day with no disruption to the timetable.
