Shops granted off-licences

Bigton Community Enterprise was one of several shops to be licensed to sell alcohol, at a meeting of the Shetland Area Licensing Board today.

The shop will be allowed to sell alcohol for consumption off-premises from 10am to 10pm seven days a week.

Councillor Allison “Flea” Duncan told the board that the Bigton enterprise had done an “outstanding job” in operating the shop, which had the full support of the community and provided a “much needed function”.

Bixter Shop, now under the ownership of S Johnston Services Ltd, was another premises to receive the endorsement of Mr Duncan. “It is very important for a community shop to obtain a licence for business,” he said. Bixter will be licensed from 10am to 10pm Monday to Sunday.

Staney Hill Shop was also granted a renewal of its seven-days-a-week off-licence which extends from 10am till 10pm.

The Hilltop Bar in Mid Yell was meanwhile granted a minor variation of licence to reposition a bar display and server within the main public bar area.
