Cafe to close

A popular Lerwick cafe is to close its doors next Friday – because of a new addition to the owner’s family.

The Havly Cafe in Charlotte Street will take its last orders next week, after owners Alasdair and Rhoda MacPherson announced its closure yesterday.

A statement on the cafe’s Facebook page read: “For us the Havly owners, the Havly has become a haven and we have been delighted to see staff and customers come to view it with the same love and loyalty that we have for it.

“Earlier this year we had a surprise of a prospective new addition to our family. We have looked for ways for the Havly to continue on without us but so far to no avail. It is with a heavy heart that we have made the decision to close.

“We want to take the chance to thank everyone who has supported, encouraged and made us their first choice over these past few years.

“We have gotten to know you by name and feel the weight of the loss. We want to thank our loyal and dedicated staff who have made this such an enjoyable experience and have given their all at work every day. You have become friends.

“We will be closing on Friday 25th April and ask that you please use any outstanding gift vouchers before that time.

“We will be endeavouring to provide you with the same hospitality, service and great food until that time and would love to see you between now and then.

“Thanks once again, Alasdair and Rhoda xx”

Tributes have flooded in for the cafe including one from Sonja Jamieson who wrote:

“No way! Actually think I’m going to greet! We love da Havly! It such a friendly, welcoming place to go to, and you always have gluten free cakes! Aa da best for the future, xx.”

The Havly brings back so many good memories. I used to work there on saturdays when I was still at school in the 90’s. It was good to meet up with friends at the Havly when I came up for a holiday in Shetland last month. Really saddened to hear it’s closing. No doubt a lot of folk will miss the cafe, but all the best for the future to the owners of the Havly.

Sorry you are closing but it’s for a very good reason. While visiting from New Zealanmd we enjoyed your hospitality. Best wishes.

Is noone interested in running the Havly ? It’s been a true institution for both Shetlanders and visitors for years !
